New passenger terminal under construction in Plovidv Updated: 2009-03-10New Passenger terminal under construction in Plovidiv airport
Construction works have just started on a new passenger terminal at Plovdiv airport. A new passenger terminal wing is to be added to the existing airport at a value of 22.3mln BGN. With high demand for flights, particularly in winter from tourists looking to visit Bulgaria's three primary ski resorts of Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo, officials said Plovdiv airport was best placed to meet the demand.
Special guests at the opening ceremony included the Bulgarian Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, and Bulgaria's Minister of Transport, Petar Mutafchiev.
"I am convinced that the Plovdiv Airport will become one of the modern airports in Bulgaria, despite the close deadlines", Mutafchiev commented.
He also reminded that was the second modernization project at Plovdiv Airport, after the expansion of the main terminal.
At 6759m2 in size and 250m from the existing terminal, the new wing will be one of the most modern passenger terminals in Bulgaria. Currently the airport does not have regular flights (except in winter) and usually only takes overflow flights from Sofia airport.
