Record Ski Season Fuels Sofia 2014 Hopes

The outgoing ski season has attracted a record number of visitors to Bulgaria, which could be of great benefit for Sofia's bid for the 2014 Winter Games.

According to the Bulgarian Ski Federation and the Sofia 2014 Bid Committee, the country stands some of the best chances to qualify for the next round of candidacy.

"The world is recognizing the amazing snow, fantastic accommodations and warm people of Bulgaria. Sofia 2014 captures all of this," Tzeko Minev, President of the Bulgarian Ski Federation, told Bulgarian media.

In Bansko, where there would be alpine skiing and biathlon events should Sofia wins the 2014 Olympics, an increase of 35% in visitors was recorded compared to 2004-2005 season.

More than 1000 new beds in hotel rooms and apartment houses opened in Bansko and more than 2,500 new hotel rooms and apartments in holiday villages are planned.

Another pearl of Bulgaria's winter locations - Borovetz - where all snowboard, cross-country and ski jumping events are planned for Sofia 2014, reported 10% more bed occupancy than last year.

In Borovetz, in the Rila Mountain, there are three new hotels with more than 260 rooms and another eight hotels are under construction.

Meanwhile 19 environmentalist organisations called for the withdrawal of Sofia 2014 bid. In a statement circulated to media, they quoted figures of BGN 1.5 potential losses for this country to be paid by the national exchequer.

According to the bids' opponents, the costs of Sofia-Olympic city are seen to be about BGN 2.644 B, while returns from tickets sale would not exceed BGN 250 M.
